Presentation 1:

Thermal Bridging and R-value

Speaker: Peter Adams, P.Eng.
Principal, Senior Building Envelope Engineer - Morrison Hershfield

  • How knowledge of thermal bridging can be applied to improve the accuracy of building energy performance.
  • Thermal modeling has determined that heat loss through the envelope, as a result of thermal bridges, can represent a significant portion of the total energy loss from a building, particularly in buildings where additional insulation has been added but thermal bridges remain unchecked. This presentation will highlight some common thermal bridges through building envelopes and the risks associated with ignoring their effects during design and construction.

Peter Adams is a Principal of Morrison Hershfield Limited and a Senior Building Envelope Engineer based in the firm’s Toronto office. A graduate of mechanical engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Peter began his building science career over twenty years ago at the National Research Council in Ottawa. He has since investigated and devised repairs for hundreds of buildings experiencing envelope failure and indoor air quality problems throughout North America, and regularly assists in building envelope design and retrofit. Peter is Past President of the Ontario Building Envelope Council, teaches building science at the university level, and is currently Vice Chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 4.4 on Building Envelopes and Materials.

Presentation 2:
Hybrid roofing system options in the Ontario market

Speaker: Ted Katsoris
Department Manager - Buildings & Facilities - Morrison Hershfield

  • A,B,C approach for specifications that seek redundancy.
  • Participants will learn about the physical characteristics of the different types of hybrid multi-ply roofing systems, including Modified Bitumen with floodcoat and gravel, built-up fluid applied systems, and dual waterproofing systems.
  • Physical characteristics of the different types of fleece backed single-ply membranes, EPDM, TPO, PVC, and KEE.
  • Different type of adhesive products like asphalt, cold and hot applied, two part urethane adhesive.
  • A description of the various benefits and advantages of various hybrid insulating strategy in roofing systems.

Ted Katsoris is a Principal and Department Manager at Morrison Hershfield with over 25 years of combined contracting and consulting experience. He has extensive experience in the field of building science and building envelope repair/rehabilitation, as well as contract administration.

Formally trained in the field of building science and project management, Ted has undertaken a wide variety of projects, ranging from building envelope repairs, mechanical upgrades, and asbestos removal to the redesign of large landscape areas.  Ted is also an active instructor with Construction Specifications Canada, and has acted as a guest instructor at Ryerson University.
