Understanding Employment Law

Friday, July 28, 2017 from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM CDT
Add to Calendar

Registration closes Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Employment law covers all rights and obligations within the employer-employee relationship – whether current employees, job applicants, or former employees.  Because of the complexity of employment relationships and the wide variety of situations that can arise, employment law involves legal issues as diverse as discrimination, wrongful termination, wages, and taxation, and workplace safety.  Many of these issues are governed by applicable federal and state law.

The function of human resources is one of the most vital roles in the library.  Whether a library has an HR professional on staff or if a library staff member wears the hat as the HR representative, they are still responsible for compliance with employment laws for their library.

Topics to be covered:

  • Job discrimination
  • Overtime/minimum wage
  • Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Age discrimination. (ADEA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Military leave
  • Equal Pay Act
  • Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
  • Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA)
  • Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA)
  • Employee Rights in the Workplace
