March Membership Meeting

ICE BLOCK 1
Presentation By:  Ryan Miller, S.E., LEED, AP
Buehler & Buehler Structural Engineers, Inc., Sacramento,
California

Heavy timber has been making its way into many mid-rise office buildings recently. The trend has taken a strong hold in regions like Seattle and Portland, and now is making its way into Sacramento. The benefits of using timber include a lighter structure, sustainable material, and the warmth of a wood interior, to name a few.

The Ice Block 1 project in Sacramento rises from the ashes of the former Crystal Ice manufacturing facility that was destroyed by fire in November 2015. The new building is four-stories with one level of subterranean parking, and will host retail and restaurant space on the first floor, with office space on the second through fourth floors. It is comprised of concrete construction from the basement to the second floor, and heavy timber springs off the second floor to the roof. The lateral system is comprised of steel Buckling Restrained Braced Frames at the upper levels. Unique challenges include exterior braced frames, braced frames with concrete surround, notched diaphragms, and two stage lateral analysis.

The presentation to the SEAOCC Membership will discuss the use of heavy timber in conjunction with concrete and steel, and the unique challenges of this project.
