Summer Teen Social Groups
Session One- now closed (June 15 - July 20)
Session Two (July 10 - August 14)

The individuals participating in the group need to be able to stay with a group of up to 11 students with two adults.  This group is facilitated by Justin Hamilton, special education teacher and counselor at Lakeland School in Elkhorn.  A second adult will be present at group to lend an extra pair of hands.  As often as possible, this second adult is Ashley Hamilton, Justin’s wife who is also a special education teacher.

Each session will meet in a different location after the initial meeting at the Autism Society SE WI Office where teens will
get acquainted and planning the monthly activities. The goal is to learn new skills and have fun participating and enjoying seasonal and community activities!

After that, the group will meet at the locations selected for the group activities. Some possible activities might include attending a sporting event, bowling, having a game night, the ever popular Laser Tag or other events suggested by participants.

Please note that the day of the week may change depending on the activity.  When the participants choose activities on the first meeting, a priority is made to do as many of these activities that the group came to a consensus about.  At times these activities meet on specific days of the week and do not overlap with the scheduled meeting date and time.  In a situation such as this, the date and time of a meeting will be adjusted, providing as much notice to the participants and their families so that schedules can be adjusted to attend the event.

Each session will include a friendship or team-building objective as well as a "homework" assignment to practice skills we are working on while having fun. This course is targeted for individuals who are willing to try new things, want to participate in group activities, and will stay with the group. Each session is limited to 11 people.

NOTES FOR PARENTS:
Please note that you will be responsible for transportation. At the first session we will have you meet for 15-30 minutes to discuss plan and expectations.  We request that you do not stay with the group on their outings.  We want the teens to have a chance to be with their peers.

Objectives:

  • meet new people
  • have fun and enjoy seasonal and community activities
  • try new things
  • practice following directions, asking questions, working with others
  • make friends

Cost: $265/member or $300/non-member for each eight-session course.  The fee includes admittance to all activities however extra spending money for snacks, beverages or incidentals is the responsibility of the participant. Some counties will allow the waiver to cover this program cost. LaCausa has covered this program cost in the past as well.
