Diagnosis and Psychopharmacology of PTSD, TBI, and Substance Use Disorders
(3 CE Hours LMSW/LCSW/LMHC/LMFT/LCAT)

With over 2.7 million service members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, there is an increased need for mental health professionals who are current in treatment strategies for PTSD, TBI, and substance use disorders. Since service members and Veterans often see their psychotherapist more often than their psychiatrist, it is important for non-medical practitioners to have an understanding of the role of medications for PTSD and comorbid or related conditions such as mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury) and substance use disorders to be able to incorporate discussions regarding medications into their plan of care.

This workshop, designed for the non-medical practitioner, will present an overview of how psychiatric medications are used in clinical practice to treat PTSD, mTBI, and substance use disorders. Realistic expectations of benefits and common side effects will also be discussed. Strategies to integrate information into dialogue with patients regarding the role of medications in treatment and recovery and effective coordination of care with prescribing physicians will also be discussed.  While the presentation is designed to fill a gap in care for Veterans and service members, professionals will be able to use knowledge gained in care of any patient with these issues.

Who Should Attend:

Social Workers and other non-medical mental health and addiction professionals and administrative staff from mental health or substance use programs.

The following topics will be discussed:
  • Brief discussion of Diagnosis of PTSD, Substance Use Disorders and mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury or concussion)
  • Medications in Treatment of PTSD, mTBI, and Substance Use Disorders
  • Common side effects of medications to treat PTSD, mTBI and Substance Use Disorders
  • The availability and use of Naloxone to treat opioid overdose will also be discussed
The participant will be able to:
  • Discuss the role of medications in comprehensive treatment of PTSD, mTBI and Substance Use Disorders
  • Identify common side effects of mental health medications used in treatment of PTSD, Depression, mTBI and Substance Use Disorders
  • Assist Service Members and Veterans in their self-monitoring of the impact of medications including side effects, symptom reduction and their conversations with their prescribing physicians
  • Identify medications that are effective for treatment of PTSD, mTBI and Substance Use Disorders
