The Thoughtful Classroom Summer Academy for Georgia Educators

Tools for Designing & Delivering Coherent Instruction

Ever since Robert Marzano and his research team published Classroom Instruction that Works, educators across the country have relied on its Nine Categories of Instruction as the “gold standard” of research. More recently, a team of researchers at McREL International updated Classroom Instruction that Works, using new research to confirm that the Nine Categories remain our “best bets” for delivering coherent instruction and raising student achievement.

But what many educators are looking for is the how. How do we adapt the generalizations in the research to plan and deliver coherent instruction? How do we monitor students' progress and refine instruction to raise achievement for all students? The answer to the question of how is: “With the right tools.”

This groundbreaking two-day academy features Dr. Harvey Silver, developer of The Thoughtful Classroom™ and the Georgia Critical Thinking Skills Program. Joining Dr. Silver will be a renowned team of trainers and coaches from the Thoughtful Classroom and McREL. Dr. Silver and his team will introduce and model classroom-ready tools that align directly with the Classroom Instruction that Works framework.

Outcomes:

Over the course of this two-day academy, participants will…

  • Build a deep understanding of the Nine Categories of Instruction and how they align with Georgia's Systems of Continuous Improvement.
  • Use this framework as a lens for assessing instructional effectiveness and the school’s overall effectiveness.
  • Learn how to address specific categories of instruction by selecting and implementing relevant tools from the upcoming text, Tools for Classroom Instruction that Works.
  • Develop a plan for meaningfully integrating tools into classroom practice to meet specific classroom challenges and student needs.

In addition, the academy will include multiple breakout sessions that will allow teachers and leaders to focus their attention on the topics that matter most to them.
