Practical Psychodynamics

Dates: Friday August 25 & Saturday August 26, 9am-5pm (both days to be attended)

This two-day workshop will provide a practical look at basic concepts and basic theories of psychodynamic psychotherapy.  At all times our focus will be on ideas that have immediate clinical focus.  No prior knowledge of psychodynamic theory is required, but please note that the workshop will be oriented towards those with a clinical practice.

Basic concepts discussed will include Unconscious Mentation; Transference; Countertransference; Space, Time and Boundaries; The effects of the Past, Present and Future; Disruption and Repair and Empathy. Basic theories will draw from Freud, Ego Psychology, British Object Relations, Self Psychology and Relational Psychoanalysis. There will be ample time for discussion of clinical cases and vignettes supplied by participants in this course.

This workshop will be of benefit for a wide-range of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other mental health clinicians as:

  • a refresher course for those familiar with the material
  • an update for those familiar with an older version of the model
  • an introduction for those coming to psychodynamic theory and principles for the first time
