Please join us for networking and breakfast at 8:00 AM. We will start the program promptly at 8:30 AM with John Kane providing a review and update of Kane Realty's developments at North Hills. Following that, Bonner Gaylord will speak about Kane's current and future development plans in other locations around Raleigh including downtown.

From Six Forks Road go east onto Front Street into North Hills East. Front Street will end just in front of the entrance to the Harris Teeter parking deck. Take a right onto Park Street. After about a block, take a right onto Market at North Hills (Chuy's will be directly in front of you.) Take a quick left just past Chuy's. This street will end at Church at North Hills where you will take a right. You will pass the Allscripts Building and turn left into the parking deck just past the building. Link to map:

John Kane, Chariman and CEO, Kane Realty Corporation
John Kane founded Kane Realty Corporation in 1978. Today as its CEO, John has successfully led an organization that has developed sustainable mixed-use communities, regional malls, neighborhood and community centers, office buildings, hotels and health centers.
Kane Realty began work on its signature project, North Hills, in late 1999 with the purchase of numerous properties in Raleigh’s North Hills, embarking on a massive billion dollar redevelopment that now encompasses 165 acres. North Hills, a mixed-use, multi-block district known as Raleigh’s Midtown, is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for its pedestrian-friendly and sustainable design which has made it one of America’s premier in-fill developments. Centrally located at the corner of one of Raleigh’s main thoroughfares and the I-440 beltline, North Hills is a destination of urban living, luxury hotel rooms, class A office space, premier dining, salons and day spas, high-end boutiques, a 14-screen movie complex, a state-of-the-art athletic club, and numerous gathering places.
John is a graduate of Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization, Chief Executives Organization and World Presidents’ Organization. John serves on the Economic Development Board of the NC Board, Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, Duke Heart Center, Chairman of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership, NC Chamber, and Chairman of the Duke Raleigh Hospital Advisory Board and a Board member of Duke University Health System.
In 2004, John was recognized as Business Leader of the Year by Business Leader Magazine, received the Pillar Award by the Triangle Business Journal, the Impact Award by Triangle CREW, Developer of the Year in 2005 by TCAR, News and Observer “Top 10 to Watch in 2009”, 2009 Sir Walter Raleigh Award by City of Raleigh, 2010 Thad Eure, Jr Memorial Award from the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau which recognizes an individual that has made a major impact on the Wake County hospitality industry. In 2015 John received the ULI Triangle J.W.Willie York Community Builder Award, the Triangle Business CEO of the year award and the Triangle Business Person of the year award. The News & Observer named John the 2016 Tarheel of the year.
Bonner Gaylord, Managing Director - Property Management, Kane Realty Corporation and Raleigh City Councilor
Bonner is the general manager of North Hills. He oversees day-to-day operations at North Hills and directs members of Kane’s property management team on marketing, events, sponsorships, public safety, custodial, maintenance, and tenant relationships. He is also involved in the planning of North Hills’ expansion, which when complete will make the project one of the country’s largest mixed-use developments.
Prior to joining Kane, Bonner held positions as both project manager and builder with Richard Gaylord homes in Raleigh where he worked on developments in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Apex and Wake Forest. He has also worked for DiVosta/Pulte Homes in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Bonner holds an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Kenan-Flagler Business School where he was a Hobgood Fellow. He is a NC licensed general contractor, a NC licensed real estate broker, a LEED accredited professional through the US Green Building Council, and a Friday Fellow through the William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations.
Bonner was elected as a Raleigh City Councilor in 2009, was reelected without opposition in 2011 and 2013, and is currently serving as the inaugural chair of the Technology and Communications Committee, Comprehensive Planning Committee member, and as council liaison to six local boards and commissions. Bonner received the Forty Under Forty award in 2009 from the Triangle Business Journal, 10 to watch in 2010 by the News and Observer, and the 2011 Outstanding Public Servant award from the N.C. Center for Voter Education.
Bonner serves ex officio on the board of directors of the Greater Raleigh Merchant Association, Shop Local Raleigh, Triangle Commuter Bike Initiative, Local Organizing Committee for the International Bluegrass Music Association, and has served on other boards including Raleigh Planning Commission, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina, inaugural Chair of the Young Leaders Group for Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Executive Committee of the ULI Triangle District Council.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop an understanding of the developers role of a large, mixed-use, place creating project encompassing various architects, contractors, and partners.
- Learn how Developers and the City of Raleigh work together as a team with new projects to align goals (uses in various neighborhoods, mass transit, traffic impacts, etc.)
- Learn how Developers, Architects, and Engineers work with the City of Raleigh to apply the UDO and Planned Development Districts to large developments.
- Understand the role that City Council plays with the planned development in the City of Raleigh and how their input can impact architectural design and uses of those development.
