Leading Personalized Learning--

SE WI

Leading organizational transformation can be isolating work, particularly for leaders. This leadership series is specifically designed for principals, teacher leaders, and district leaders to provide the support and community needed to initiate and sustain transformational personalized learning work in their schools and districts using the book authored by Jim Rickabaugh, Tapping the Power of Personalized Learning: A Roadmap for School Leaders. The cohort will provide leaders with the strategies and skills necessary to lead this work, including split-screen leadership – simultaneously leading this work and managing in a traditional environment. Leaders are encouraged to participate as part of a school or district team.

Between each session participants will be invited to identify activities to engage in within their school or district. Activities will be based on the unique context and specific work each participant or team identifies. Each team will set goals for their growth and outcomes from the experience. Online opportunities will be provided for participants to provide updates on their progress and engage in ongoing collaboration with other teams.

Session 1:  August 9, 8:00am--12:00pm

At this session participants will be exposed to a framework to understand levers to support change efforts and how to know where the greatest opportunities for success likely will lie, based on the framework presented in Five Levers to Improve Learning: How to Prioritize for Powerful Results in Your School, co-authored by Tony Frontier and Jim Rickabaugh. Teams will also reflect on their goals for participation in the cohort. Participants will discuss current struggles and strategies and what they might imply for the work ahead. Split-screen leadership will be discussed, along with how participants can manage and balance these sometimes competing priorities.

Take-home

Read the first three chapters of Tapping the Power of Personalized Learning: A Roadmap for School Leaders and engage in at least three end of chapter suggested activities.

Session 2:  August 17, 8:00am--11:00am

In this session, teams will be introduced to concepts, frameworks and leadership practices to support transformation to personalized learning, such as examining assumptions and practices inconsistent with supporting the success of all learners, building the case for change design principles and shifts in learning, instructional practice and leadership.

Take-home Activity:

Read the final three chapters of Tapping the Power of Personalized Learning and engage in at least three end of chapter activities.

Session 3:   August 24, 12:30pm--4:00pm

The final session will explore ways to sustain leadership while supporting others in the organization as the change process continues. Particular attention will be given to what occurs as an organization moves beyond start-up to stabilization and approaches scale and how to lead an organization there.

Take-home Activity:

Participants identify their school/district’s current stage in transformation per Kotter’s model and commit to implement at least three activities corresponding to the transformation stage in which they see their school or district.
