Fair Use for Social Media - Copyright and External Library Communications: Webinar (08/15/17) 

Social media, such as Facebook, Pinterest, and blogs, as well as traditional forms of external communication (e.g. flyers, posters), offer libraries effective and economical means of advertising programs, resources, and services to patrons on platforms they typically turn to for information. Social media posts, Pinterest boards, flyers or posters frequently incorporate copyrighted content, raising questions about whether permission is required or if an exception such as fair use applies.

During this presentation, attendees will be introduced to fair use and how it applies to these types of communications as well as receive guidance on locating open access or openly licensed content for use in external communications.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand the four factors of fair use and how it applies to use of copyrighted content in social media and other external communications
2. Locate open access or openly licensed images, texts, or other copyrighted works

Virtual Trainer: Christine Fruin 

Christine Fruin is currently Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of Florida. Drawing upon her education and experience as an attorney, she has worked for over a decade as an academic librarian dedicated to promoting access to and use of diverse collections through utilization of fair use, open access and responsible licensing. Fruin is a frequent author and speaker on copyright in online education, fair use in higher education and open and public access. Her other interests include use of media in online education, information law and policy in libraries, and collection development/management.
