GIS Applications for Supply Chain Transportation Networks - May 23, 5:30-8:00PM, JMU Lakeview Hall

Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to Optimize Your Supply Chain - Determine Service Areas, DC Location, Optimum Transportation Routes, and Use Apps to Collect Data in the Field and Map Supply Chain Assets.

Presenter: Dr. William J. Ritchie, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, College of Business

James Madison University, Lakeview Hall

Join us for an evening of networking and learning.  After networking and dinner, learn how GIS can be used to analyze supply chain networks.

In this meeting, we'll start with an overview of geographic information systems (GIS), including: software, terminology, applications, and workflows. We'll then focus on a few specific supply chain network problems such as optimization of customer service areas, DC location, transportation routes, and spatial analysis. We will also demonstrate apps for data collection in the field. Building on this, Dr. Ritchie will walk us through the best practices in implementing and integrating a GIS system.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the key components, workflow, applications, and benefits of GIS for optimizing supply chain networks
  • Learn analytical techniques available with GIS and their purpose
  • Learn the best practices for implementing, integrating, and managing a GIS for supply chain management
  • Learn how to use GIS to improve data quality, quality of delivered products, efficiency, and sharing capability

“A well-designed transportation network allows a supply chain to achieve the desired degree of responsiveness at a low cost.”  - APICS, Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution Learning System, Version 1.0, 2017 Edition
