June 2017: Fake News and How to Spot It

The Oxford Dictionary's word of the year in 2016 was “post-truth,” and it seems fake news is everywhere these days—which is why information literacy and media literacy are more important than ever in today’s world.

Join Ryan O'Grady, a librarian with the Enoch Pratt Free Library/Maryland State Library Resource Center, in understanding the role, value, and power of information and news.

This training provides you with strategies for evaluating information sources and spotting fake news that you can use for yourself and with your customers. After this training, you will be able to:

  • Create and provide others with a definition and understanding of what fake news is
  • Distinguish and explain the different types and categories of fake news
  • Evaluate information and news sources using specific techniques and strategies
  • Utilize and share with others three simple questions that guide an understanding of news stories
