Meditation Retreat with
Ayya Medhanandi Bhikkhuni

Ayya Medhanandi

Ayya Medhanandi Bhikkhuni is the founder and guiding teacher of Sati Saraniya Hermitage, a Theravada Buddhist monastery for women in Perth, Ontario. She began a spiritual quest in childhood that led her to a long retreat in Myanmar (Burma) in 1987. The following year, she requested full ordination as a bhikkhuni from her preceptor, Venerable Saydaw U Pandita. This was not yet possible for Theravda Buddhist women. Instead, he granted her 10-precept novice vows on condition that she take them for life.

After a military coup, she left Myanmar to train with the Thai Forest Sangha at Amaravati, UK and ten years later moved to New Zealand, and then SE Asia. In 2007, having been an alms mendicant nun for nearly 20 years, she received bhikkhuni ordination in Taiwan. In 2008, on invitation from the Ottawa Buddhist Society and Toronto Theravada Buddhist Community, Ayya returned to her native Canada to establish Sati Saraniya Hermitage.

Join us for this opportunity to be with Ayya Medhanandi. There will be periods of silent sitting and walking meditation and teachings throughout the day. This retreat is suitable for beginner or experienced meditators.

Ayya Medhanandi will be accompanied by Ayya Nimmala from Vancouver, BC.

Thank you,
