Day 1:

Starting the School Year Off Right: Tools for a Successful School Year

MONDAY, JULY 10, 2017 | 8:15AM–4:00PM CT

All successful classrooms, regardless of grade level or content, are built on “Four Cornerstones.” In this academy, best-selling author and nationally recognized presenter Dr. Harvey Silver, along with Kentucky-based school improvement specialist Joyce Jackson, will show you how to use the first few weeks of school to build these Four Cornerstones. More specifically, you will learn a set of classroom-ready tools that will help you

  • Establish rules and procedures that promote positive behavior.
  • Foster meaningful classroom relationships and a strong sense of community.
  • Increase student engagement and make learning enjoyable.
  • Help students become better learners and more sophisticated thinkers.

Day 2A:

Reading and Writing in the Content Areas

TUESDAY, JULY 11, 2017 | 8:15AM–4:00PM CT

In this academy, Joyce Jackson, a renowned Kentucky educator and literacy expert, will show you how primary through high school teachers use instructional tools to build core literacy skills in all content areas. More specifically, you will learn

  • The key reading and writing skills that are most prevalent in the standards and assessments.
  • Practical tools for developing these core literacy skills without sacrificing content knowledge.
  • How to integrate formative assessment techniques that support the development of these skills in your classroom.

Day 2B:

Developing Critical Thinking in Every Mathematics Classroom

TUESDAY, JULY 11, 2017 | 8:15AM–4:00PM CT

There has been a major shift towards critical thinking in the mathematics classroom; today’s math students must be able to reason and explain, model and use tools, and see structure and patterns. In this academy, mathematics author and expert Dr. Ed Thomas will focus on helping you make thinking practices central to your curriculum and instruction. More specifically, you will learn

  • A variety of instructional strategies and student-engagement activities that foster complex thinking.
  • How to align lesson plans, teaching practices, and assessment so that they work together to build the practices.
