Book:  The Lady in Gold

Film:  Woman in Gold

The Auburn Great Books group invites you to discuss the extraordinary story of Gustav Klimt’s The Lady in Gold, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. The painting, stolen by Nazis during World War II created a profound dispute in the art world. The story begins with Adele Bloch-Bauer’s rich social circle in the fin-de-siecle Vienna, and Klimt’s incursion into her world. Then, Nazi destruction ensues. Nevertheless, over the years, her portrait continues to carry the power of art into politics, society, identity, and memory.

Join us on May 13. Please purchase the paperback by Anne-Marie O’Connor, First Vintage Book Edition March 2015 (Amazon $11.69)
ISBN 978-1-101-87312-0.

We meet at the Auburn Municipal Airport, 13630 New Airport Road, Auburn CA 95602, about three miles north of Old Town Auburn. Check-in is at 9:30 Saturday, and the discussion begins at 10. Lunch
will be catered on location, and is included in the $22 registration fee.

After lunch, we watch the movie “Woman in Gold” starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds, 2015. The movie traces the story of Maria Altmann, now the octogenarian niece of Adele Bloch-Bauer, who pursues her heritage and aunt’s portrait from the government of Austria, decades later.

Join us in Auburn, California’s historic gold country, a fitting venue for this gold mosaic portrait. Donna Reynolds, Auburn registrar will provide driving directions (better than your GPS!) to our airport meeting place. She also has good recommendations for lodging and restaurants nearby.
