 The Changing Landscape:
Meeting the Health Needs of LA’s Immigrant Communities

Register Now!

Join immigration experts and local health care leaders for a focused discussion and strategy session on the emerging challenges and best practices for effectively meeting the health needs of LA’s immigrant communities in these uncertain times.

Topic Overview

Since the 2016 Presidential election, the political climate for immigrant communities has become more complex and uncertain. Highly publicized raids by federal immigration officials around the country, as well as executive orders restricting entry to the United States for immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, have increased fear and anxiety among immigrants, their families, and local communities.

Historically, many immigrants faced multiple barriers to accessing health care, including limited English proficiency, low health literacy, and lack of health insurance. Many immigrants fear that giving personal information to service providers, including health care providers, or using government-sponsored programs, including Medi-Cal, may lead to adverse consequences in any future immigration or citizenship proceeding. An atmosphere that discourages immigrants from seeking health services could increase health risks, for them and for their communities. Moreover, an environment of constant anxiety and uncertainty leaves individuals and families, including children, vulnerable to stress-related health and mental health conditions.

Health care providers and policymakers must consider and address the impacts of today’s increasingly hostile political climate on immigrant communities, so they can access the health care services needed to maintain and improve health.
