Description:
We will have two panelists, a cross-border estate planning attorney and a cross-border tax professional, and the moderator is a cross-border financial planner.

Attendees will learn about estate planning, tax, and financial planning issues faced by American citizens living outside the USA and non-US citizens who are moving to the USA, as well as issues faced by US financial planning professionals that cater to such clients.

Topics will include:
-    Tax reporting considerations under FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act)
-    Reporting of foreign mutual funds for US taxpayers
-    Implications of the Windfall Elimination Provision for US taxpayers with non-US pensions
-    Application of the estate tax exemption and marital deduction in the case of non-US citizens/residents
-    Foreign and domestic trust considerations in cross-border situations
-    Difficulties faced by US citizens living abroad with respect to maintaining financial accounts
-    Business and licensing considerations for US advisors with non-US clients

Tom Zachystal, CFA, CFP® is president and owner of Individual Asset Management (IAM), a Registered Investment Advisor based in Menlo Park and specializing in investment management and financial planning for US expatriates. Tom has been advising US expats since 2002 and was an expat himself for ten years working as an engineer in the oil industry.

Krystle Chow, CPA works with Spott, Lucey, and Wall, Inc. CPAs, a San Francisco-based accounting firm providing a full range of taxation and attestation services. Krystle is a key member of the management team at the firm. Krystle specializes in international tax and reporting requirements, assisting domestic and international businesses and individuals with managing their demanding cross-border transactions. 

Krystle began her career in 2009, at the start of the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program, and has continued to this day to serve her clients through a wide variety of international tax situations.  Her clients include privately-owned corporations and partnerships as well as trusts and individuals.  Krystle’s individual clients are entrepreneurs, investors, business owners and executives, often with a high net worth acquired through inheritance. While Krystle’s client base is mainly in Europe, Australia, and Asia, her clients have world-wide connections.

Krystle is an active member of Financial Women of San Francisco and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. Krystle graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a focus in Accounting.  She earned her Master of Science in Taxation at Golden Gate University. She is currently pursuing the Certificate in International Taxation at Golden Gate University.

Melissa S. Hung

Melissa S. Hung is a senior associate in Farella Braun + Martel’s Family Wealth Group.

She assists families and individuals by developing and implementing estate planning strategies to transfer assets in a tax-efficient manner.  Her experience includes customizing revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, and other vehicles to promote her clients’ objectives.  Ms. Hung also advises fiduciaries regarding trust and estate administrations.

Ms. Hung is certified as a specialist in Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.  She has been selected among the Northern California Super Lawyers - Rising Stars (2013–2016). 

Ms. Hung is conversational in Mandarin Chinese.
