Still Life Painting | play of light in & out with Megan Euell

August 2nd, 3rd, 4th | 10am - 1pm

The art of the still life continues to be a great subject of conversation as to it's significance in the practice of painting.  The typical definition of still life is: a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter.  We humans, for a long time, have felt compelled to bring life to these objects that are otherwise motionless.

Still life artists of the 19th century such as Cezanne, Fantin-Latour and in the United States, Raphaelle Peale, took still life painting in new directions.  The impressionists took away allegorical content and we saw broad brush strokes, tonal values and experimentation with color placement.  In the 20th century, further innovation led to art movements such as Cubism and Pop Art.

Whether one is doing an exacting portrait of a significant object or a cubist abstraction of a mysterious material item, it stands that it takes skill and imagination to seize sensual elements of texture, color, and weight.  A tea cup and spoon, or a vase of flowers, the exercise of technique along with artistry can bring a seeming illusion, to a visual representation and resonance of complex beauty.
Still Life in Sunlight is a unique take on a classic category, once before admired for the control of the set-up of inanimate objects, focused light source and symbolismArtist Megan Euell will demonstrate how this genre can go past the boundaries of exacting precision and utilize nature's color schemes, natural rhythms and light to choose a composition and illuminate the objects before you as you paint the still life en plein air and compare it to a still life done indoors.

Please sign up early, class size is limited to 6 seats!
