Mussar Kallah XV

The Mussar Kallah will be held Thursday, November 30 at 5 PM to Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 12 PM, at the Capital Camps Retreat Center in Waynesboro, PA, approximately 90 minutes north of the Baltimore BWI airport and 90 to 120 minutes to Dulles. The registration fee includes your lodging, all programs and food (glatt kosher). No need to book a separate room at the retreat center.

The Program

The theme of the Kallah is "The Holiness of Engagement."

Society has never been more polarized. Core values that have been at the center of Jewish life — humility, compassion, truth, trust, justice, respect, generosity, lovingkindness, and welcoming the stranger, for example — are under direct assault in the public arena. The study and practice of Mussar shows us how we can and should respond. Mussar guides us on a path of active engagement with life and its challenges in a way that keeps us on track toward the ultimate goal Jewish tradition sets for us, which is to cultivate our personal holiness and to bring that holy light into the world.

The annual Mussar Kallah is our opportunity to gather in a warm, supportive community of like-minded souls to learn what it means to engage in life’s challenges in a holy way. How do we …

  • discern what steps will lead to holier engagement with others?
  • balance the needs of others with our own needs?
  • ensure that we are the agents of justice?

Whether you are new to Mussar or a returning participant, the retreat will provide a rich experience for practicing Mussar in a supportive community. We will:

  • connect with other souls committed to doing the inner work of Mussar
  • work on the middot (soul traits) that relate to compassion
  • come to know and learn from the modern-day leaders in the Mussar world
  • renew acquaintances and make new friends
  • enjoy the quiet of a retreat away from our busy everyday lives
