Supporting Trauma Recovery for Youth with Developmental Disabilities:

The Road to Recovery Toolkit and

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

3 Continuing Education Hours

LMSW/LCSW/LMHC/LCAT/LMFT

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness is proud to partner with Long Island Jewish Medical Center Northwell Health to provide this workshop.

This three hour workshop presented by four members of the Supporting Trauma Recovery for Youth with Developmental Disabilities (STRYDD) Project will focus on the needs of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities who have experienced trauma.  The workshop will offer clinicians a framework for working with this population by providing an overview of modifications and skills they should consider when engaging this population. The workshop will begin by reviewing the Road to Recovery Toolkit and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and then discuss considerations for adaptations of interventions such as TF-CBT for this population.

The Road to Recovery Toolkit is a product of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network developed to teach basic knowledge, skills, and values about working with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have experienced traumatic events. The Toolkit includes modules teaching learners how to support children’s safety and recovery through practices that are trauma-informed. (Presented by Juliet Vogel, PhD and Catherine Sancimino, PsyD)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment developed to support children and adolescents who have experienced traumatic events. TF-CBT is a well-established therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for children. Strong research support for TF-CBT shows children and adolescents can successfully resolve emotional and behavioral struggles that have occurred in relation to traumatic experiences.  TF-CBT is a flexible model and can be used to treat children and adolescents of various ages and ability levels. (Presented by Peter D'Amico, PhD and Valentina Stoycheva, PhD)
