Cataloging for Non-Catalogers: Webinar (08/29/17)

No matter where you work in the library, knowledge of basic cataloging will enhance and improve your skills.

This online training will offer a basic orientation to cataloging – its purpose, its goals, its terminology – including what information is most important, the original cataloging process, copy cataloging, and MARC –the framework used to code the information (yes, catalogers CODE!).

A great start for the beginning cataloger as well as an introduction for the non-cataloging staff, manager, and administrator.

After this webinar participants will:

  • know why we catalog and how it affects the whole library
  • comprehend cataloging terminology
  • understand the cataloging process as a whole
  • recognize parts of the MARC record
  • identify cataloging resources
  • Objectives:

To gain an understanding of what cataloging is, how it affects the organization as a whole, and how it is evolving.

Methods:

Lecture with Q&A

Use of real world examples to illustrate the abstract concepts being introduced

Outcomes:

Attendees will leave with a better understanding of what cataloging is and how it fits into the organization as a whole.  They will have tools and skills that can be immediately applied to their daily activities, whether in public or technical services. Every attendee will leave with resources and learning aids to continue the learning process on their own.

Virtual Trainer: Melissa Powell, Biblioease

Melissa  Powell has worked for 35 years in libraries as a paraprofessional and degreed professional, in addition to a 4-year “retirement” to learn about the book & publishing industry.  She is an Independent Librarian currently teaching Cataloging Fundamentals, Collection Management, and Customer Service Skills and regularly consults with school and public libraries on technical and public services.

This is an online class. Access information will be emailed one week ahead.

Cost: NEFLIN classes are free of charge for Florida library staff. Registration is required for all classes and NEFLIN members get priority.
