Course has been approved by Monroe Learning Network for .2 CEU's/2 Contact Hours. Monroe Learning Network is recognized by the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions, as an approved provider/sponsor of physical therapy, physical therapy assistant, occupational therapy, and occupational therapy assistant continuing education/competency.

Living Life Without Limits Through Adaptive Sports 

Join us for an introductory, hands-on, continuing education course that will dive into the topic of Adaptive Sports for people with disabilities. Course will review the benefits to adaptive sports participation; common barriers preventing participation; equipment options for wheelchair tennis, basketball, & handcycling; and how to get involved. The adaptive sporting equipment will be present during the course and participants will have many opportunities to test it out throughout the course. 

Course Highlights:

1. What are adaptive sports? Everyday equipment versus sports equipment?
2. What are some target diagnoses and how does participation affect patient outcomes?
3. Fitting considerations, process, and how to choose right equipment.
4. Overview of the these adaptive sports: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and handcycling
5. Ways to increase participation in adaptive sports and barriers to participating.
6. Interactive portion- testing out the different types of adaptive sporting equipment.


Learning Objectives:

1.Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to identify three (3) benefits associated with participation in adaptive sports.

2.Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to verbalize several barriers that often prevent participation in adaptive sports.

3.Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to briefly describe equipment options available for three (3) different adaptive activities.

4.Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to discuss ways to increase access and participation in adaptive sports programs.

Presenter Biography:

Steve Adams is a member of the Invacare Professional Affairs and Clinical Education (PACE) team as a Solution Specialist for Power and Mobility.  Steve joined Invacare in 2004 as a Territory Business Manager and has established himself as a resource to many team members in our clinically complex product portfolio.   Steve is the trainer focusing on TopEnd, adaptive sports, and powered mobility.  Prior to joining Invacare, Steve worked on the provider side as a Rehab Technology Specialist.
