This training is based upon The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, developed by Jim Kouzes and Berry Posner. Through a series of creative learning activities and exercises, as well as the utilization of a Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), this workshop will de-mystify the concept of leadership development and approach it as a learnable set of behaviors.  Today, The Five Practices along with 10 commitments and the 30 behaviors are the basis of The Leadership Challenge® Model, the most recognized standard of leadership excellence.

OVERVIEW

During this session, participants will explore "The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership,” Jim Kouzes & Barry Posner's evidence-based experiential model that starts with the premise that "leadership is everyone's business." Through a series of creative learning activities and exercises, as well as the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), this workshop will de-mystify the concept of leadership development and approach it as a learnable set of behaviors. The guiding principles include the belief that leadership development is self-development, that it takes practice, and it is both an aspiration and a choice.

Objectives

  • Participants will identify their leadership strengths and weaknesses by completing and analyzing the LPI assessment report.
  • Participants will explore and be able to use The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.
  • Participants will apply the lessons learned in the workshop to their current organizational challenges.

PRE-TRAINING WORK

Pre-Assessment Inventory for workshop attendees:

The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) is a 360-degree leadership assessment tool that approaches leadership as a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors. This assessment tool helps individuals measure their leadership competencies, while guiding them through the process of applying The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® Model to their real-life organizational challenges.

Leaders will complete a short survey online, which contains thirty questions. They will also choose approximately ten people to complete the LPI as Observers to receive feedback on their leadership behaviors. They should include a manager(s), all direct reports, and at least three coworkers or others.

The LPI is a deep dive into what participants are like as employees, beyond the subjective perspective.

WHY THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE WORKSHOP?

This training is perfect for directors and managers as it allows them to complete a 360-degree assessment of their leadership style, by assessing themselves and receiving feedback from others. Then, they are able to expand on these findings by participating in exercises that correlate to The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership and discover how these “practices” can be applied to their daily lives to improve workplace productivity and relationships.  Head Start agencies are experiencing enormous stress and additional uncertainty due to re-competition, budget restrictions, and increased poverty in families leading to more children with challenging behaviors.  This workshop provides a means to achieve extraordinary things in your agency despite these challenges.

I'M NOT A DIRECTOR OR MANAGER.  IS THIS FOR ME?

This training is best experienced with a mix of professionals -- Executive Directors, deputy directors, content specialists education specialists, community partners and other emerging leaders) -- which allows participants to better compare, contrast, and share.  Also note that this training is not Head Start driven material.  It is very much an individual personal leadership development opportunity.
