MA DOR Topics

June 20th, 12:30pm to 3:15
Fall River Comfort Inn, Airport Rd
12:30 to 2pm: MA Taxpayer Advocate Dana Ackerman will be on hand to discuss recent DOR changes in procedures and to preview upcoming software changes. Dana is the go-to person to identify systemic problems and to propose solutions. She supervises the Problem Resolution Office that assist taxpayers and assures that they are treated fairly. Learn what DOR resources are on the website and who to call to make you a more effective tax representative.

2pm to 3:15: John Warren, EA will review the tricks and traps of the MA circuit breaker credit. Filing amended return to claim the credit has different requirements than efiling an original return claiming the credit.  Not all homes in trusts and life estates are treated similarly. What about assisted living and nursing homes? Software products do not properly compute Sch CB income. There is a lot more behind this credit than the annual update and modified TIR. We will plod through the details of MGL 62 S6k, the legislation that codified the MA Circuit Breaker Credit.

3:15 to 3:45: John Warren, EA will walk through and compare the procedures of the RI and MA voluntary disclosure programs. Assist non-filing and late filing taxpayers by abating penalties. Every 2015 CP2000 letter is eligible for this program. The procedures are very different than when dealing with the IRS. There is no first time abatement with the states, but there is voluntary disclosure abatement!

There is no cost to MaSEA & RISEA members. State tax topic seminars do not earn IRS CPE.

Important Notice Re: CPE

CPE credits count toward fulfillment of the Continuing Professional Education requirements of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, the Massachusetts Society of Enrolled Agents and the Internal Revenue Service. Except education credits for state tax courses will not count toward IRS requirements under Circular 230.
