GA Child Welfare Legal Academy

In almost a third of child welfare cases, a parent's use of alcohol or other drugs is a factor in removing a child from the home.  In response, states are seeking alternatives to traditional dependency courts and Family Treatment Court is a promising model.  Over the last two decades, Family Treatment Courts have grown exponentially and served thousands of families across 35 states.  However, they present particular ethical challenges for attorneys working in them.  This Child Welfare Legal Academy will dive into the ethical challenges of Family Treatment Courts here in Georgia and across the country.  Our Visiting Scholars in Practice will highlight positive standards and discuss unique challenges for attorneys in these courts, such as competence, confidentiality, diligence and zealous advocacy.  Participants will gain an understanding of Family Treatment Courts and the need for rigorous ethical standards to protect the client and the attorney.
