Essential Management Skills Certificate Program

Carson City  

This four-session program has been created to assist supervisors and managers in learning to build credibility through effective communication, time management, and performance management skills.  This workshop-based program is an invaluable opportunity for participants to learn proven techniques to make them more effective leaders in their organizations.  Participants will need to be available to attend all four sessions.  Completion of all four sessions is required to earn a certificate.  

Participants will receive a comprehensive training manual that can be used as a reference after the course. 

This course is limited to 30 seats; registration will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Who Should Attend?

This program has been developed for anyone who is currently in a management role or has been recently promoted.  Whether in the trenches, or just starting to manage others, this program provides a wealth of ideas, techniques, and knowledge to help manage people and projects effectively.

Program Agenda

Session 1 - Personal Insights & Legal Aspects 101

  • Communicate more effectively with others by identifying your own communication style, as well as communication styles of others
  • Apply the principles of situational leadership by identifying your preferred leadership style, the pros and cons of each style, and the appropriate application of each style
  • Rule out drug and alcohol usage as a cause of poor performance
  • Turn conflict into developmental opportunities
  • Review civil rights' laws along with current issues related to discrimination

Session 2 - Keeping Your Organization Out of Hot Water: Legal Compliance

  • Identify the components of a legally-compliant job description
  • Reduce applicant pool by using screening techniques
  • Recognize interview questions that can and cannot be asked, plus the legal implications of certain types of interview questions
  • Discuss the interaction between the ADA, FMLA, and workers’ compensation

Session 3 - Coaching, Evaluating, and Due Process

  • Identify your preferred listening style
  • Implement the performance management cycle
  • Apply the steps of coaching
  • Demonstrate the steps for giving feedback
  • Utilize the progressive disciplinary process
  • Write documentation for successful disciplinary actions

Session 4 - Managing Time, Over Time

  • Identify priorities by establishing importance and urgency of each task
  • Recognize time wasters and discuss how to eliminate them
  • Select appropriate tasks to delegate and apply monitoring techniques to track performance
  • Review the requirements of FLSA exemptions and compensable time
  • Apply methods to better manage a multigenerational workforce
  • Discuss how to transition from "buddy to boss"
