The  Center for Autism Research (CAR) is a collaborative research center between The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. CAR's primary mission is to understand the causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and develop effective treatments through research with infants through adults. Families who participate receive comprehensive assessment reports and are paid for their time and some travel expenses. CAR is also committed to serving the needs of families living with ASD through education and guidance. The new CAR Autism Roadmap seeks to help families answer questions about life with autism, whether they are new to the diagnosis or have lived with it for years, as well as connect them with resources in their communities via the CAR Resource Directory.

Next Steps into Adulthood Workshop

-A Workshop for Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the Parents/Caregivers/Professionals who support them-

The transition from adolescence into adulthood can be an exciting, yet daunting time for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. Preparing for adulthood may involve entering a new environment, graduating from school, handling different social situations and responsibilities, and accepting changes in a comfortable routine. Individuals with ASD and those who support them face decisions and logistical planning that affect every aspect of life: healthcare, domestic life, finances, relationships, education, and employment.

CAR is presenting a day long workshop for individuals with autism and their families who are anticipating higher education and/or employment with minimal support. Presenters will share ideas, resources, and tools to help older teens and young adults with ASD find their path to a more independent adult life.

There will be two tracks: one for family members/providers & one for young adults with ASD.

  • Presenters will include experts in autism including psychology, behavior, education, and social work.
  • Young adults will participate in small-group discussions related to navigating ASD as an adult.
  • There will be a lunchtime resource fair with information from support organizations & service providers.
