Eleanor Roosevelt, the AFSC, and Help for the Appalachian Miners

Hear FitC member Gregory Barnes draw upon his Centennial History of the American Friends Service Committee and other research on Eleanor Roosevelt.

The woman who became the model for First Ladies,  Eleanor Roosevelt served as guardian angel for the American Friends Service Committee during much of her husband's long tenure as President (1933-1945).

In particular, she worked enthusiastically with the AFSC in alleviating poverty among Appalachian miners during the Depression of the 'thirties.

Greg Barnes will discuss his research, revealing
  •  Mrs. Roosevelt's common touch
  •  her use of the levers of power in assisting AFSC programs to relieve the stresses in the coal-mining communities.

Questions and participants' insights will be welcome. Limited to 25 for discussion, and only open to FitC members.
