Presented by the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire & VSA New Hampshire
as part of their Arts in Inclusive Learning collaboration, under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

Fee: $35, with discounts for Arts Alliance members (both schools & individuals) and students. Partial scholarships are available if needed. Professional development credit is offered. Please bring a lunch.

Designed for art teachers, special education staff and para-educators as well as out-of-school staff offering arts-based activities, administrators and interested parents, this hands-on workshop will demonstrate techniques, lessons and art activities which can be adapted to a wide range of ages and abilities. 

 It will give participants an overview of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with specific application to art lessons and experiences which are inclusive and meet the needs of ALL students – including those with disabilities and/or special learning needs.

 Topics to be explored will include: 

  • engaging all students in art experiences and lessons
  • using multiple modalities for introducing materials and concepts 
  • exploring and making adaptive art tools and equipment suitable for students with unique motor and developmental needs
  • designing lessons using UDL principles, which offer a wide range of ways in students can participate and meet the lesson's goals
  • employing communication strategies for learners who are non-verbal or who have language-based learning disabilities
  • finding creative ways to meet state and federal standards which can apply to all learners

Our Presenter:

Deborah Stuart has worked for over 40 years with children in classrooms and as a teaching consultant with a focus on Universal Design for Learning nationally and internationally. She has done extensive training for educators and was a core faculty member for the VSA Arts Institute: Professional Development in Art, Education and Disability. She has led national webinars and programs offered by the Department of VSA and Accessibility at the Kennedy Center, and she is the 2014 recipient of the national VSA Ginny Miller Award for Mentorship.
