About the Instructor, Mike Smieja:
"Growing up, pottery was my passion. I took a break for 15+ years and my path lead me back. The clay is the boss, I am just the grateful messenger."  - Zilla

I fell in love with making pottery in high school. I wanted to pursue it as a profession , but several people told me I would never make any money. After owning several businesses I found myself attending college for the first time when I was 32. After graduation I started a non-profit here in Minneapolis and set out to change the world. My path lead me back to a potters wheel and I fell in love again 20 years later, so I bought a wheel and a kiln and reinvented myself as a potter. I believe that my pottery embraces the changes that I have made in my life. I hope that my pots are just a vehicle to build relationships between people and places.
