Southwest Branch of The International Dyslexia Association - Taos Event

Saturday, September 16, 2017      8 to noon                       UNM-Taos, Klauer Campus

A light breakfast will be served from 8-8:30

Parents and All Educators:

8:30 – 10:00 Participate in Six Simulated Activities which mimic the experiences and processing of those with dyslexia.  Gain a better appreciation and understanding for what some individuals deal with on a daily basis – in school and on the job.  In less than two hours, you will learn more about dyslexia than weeks of reading books on dyslexia.

A veteran teacher in Albuquerque, who just went through the Simulations, said it was "one of the best two workshops in all my years of teaching."

10:30 – 12:00  Dyslexia 101: What dyslexia is (and isn’t) and the interventions that have been shown, through solid research, to have a positive impact. There will be time for questions and answers with resource information available.  (Dyslexia therapists Mary Gilroy and Angelia Henderson will join parent Gina Hawryluk in presenting this session.)

Students with Dyslexia (ages 10+ recommended but not required)

8:30 – 12:00.  Students will participate in a series of fun challenges to deepen their understanding of how the brain works and what they can do to increase their success in school and life. They will learn about “growth mindset” and the “power of yet” from Rayna Dineen, Education Consultant with EL Education and Director of Reading Quest, Santa Fe, NM.  Then Annalise Zosel, Roots and Wings Community School and Stephanie Owens, Ph.D, both educators and parents of students with dyslexia, will facilitate the next step – where do students go from here and how do they stay connected and supportive of each other.

When registering, please include the student's age so that we can group by age range.
