Charitable Lead Trusts: Fundamentals and Planning Opportunities
Program Description:
Charitable Lead Trusts (CLT) are perhaps less well-known than their famous cousin, the charitable remainder trust. Nevertheless, CLTs are a useful tool in many planning situations. This program will cover the fundamentals regarding the structure of and requirements for CLTs as well as detailed case studies to showcase the favorable economic results that CLTs can produce.

Kirsten Wolff represents individual clients in the areas of estate planning, estate and trust administration, estate and gift taxation, charitable gift planning, and probate. She previously practiced in the area of state and local taxation and frequently draws from that experience in her current work with clients, particularly with respect to property and income tax issues, in planning for the tax-efficient transfer of wealth. She has administered trusts with complex assets in multiple international jurisdictions.

Ms. Wolff also assists clients with their philanthropic planning, including by establishing and obtaining tax exemption for new foundations and other non-profit organizations, and providing advice regarding ongoing tax and administration issues.

U.S. Trust Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy
Program Description:
This presentation will review the key findings of the U.S. Trust 2016 Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy, a biennial study that has been conducted in conjunction with Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. It is considered one of the largest and longest running body of research of its kind.  In this presentation we will review the study findings, and attempt to provide deeper understanding of giving patterns and views of the current economic and political environment as it relates to philanthropy.

Matthew Laufman is a Senior Vice President and Practice Expert – Philanthropic Consulting and Planned Giving with U.S. Trust Institutional Investments and Philanthropic Solutions group. Matt’s responsibilities include providing in-depth philanthropic planning knowledge and tailored solutions to assist client in pursuing their mission and goals. In this capacity, Matt is able to provide best practices and consultative services in several areas, including governance and oversight, development strategies, board and staff education, and strategic planning. Matt works closely with the organization’s leadership, boards, development committees and staff to provide the knowledge and resources needed to address challenges and thrive. Matt provides ongoing strategic and philanthropic consultative services to support nonprofit clients.

Matthew has over 25 years of experience in the philanthropic industry, serving as Director of Gift Planning for Sutter Health, a nonprofit health care system based in Northern California, Vice President of the Community Home Health and Hospice of SW Washington, and Director of Planned Giving for Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He is a member of the Northern California Planned Giving Council, and has served on several boards, education panels and advisory committees.

Matt is a graduate of the University of Washington, where he majored in Business with a concentration in Finance. Matt is a member of the Northern California Planned Giving Council, as well as the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy. Matt is a frequent speaker on various philanthropic topics.
