In Honor of Dr. Nichols, Mrs. Tricia Nichols and the Nichols Trust are sponsoring an educational symposium organized by the Southern California Section of American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC). The symposium is going to be a yearly event in Southern California. The first symposium in 2017 is dedicated to endocrinology as Dr. Nichols was an endocrinologist. Future symposiums are going to cover a wide variety of topics in clinical laboratory medicine.

PRESENTED BY
Dr. Albert Nichols was an Assistant Professor at UCLA Harbor Medical Center before he started Nichols Institute for Endocrinology in Southern California in the early 1970s. His journey started in the early 1960s when he was a Fellow of Endocrinology at Mass General Hospital (Harvard University) in Boston. He and others had developed endocrinology tests using a new technology called radioimmunoassay (RIA) that allowed the measurement of small quantities of hormones and other biomarkers in patient samples. These hormone tests have revolutionized the practice of medicine. He soon realized that these new tests were not available to most clinicians and there was a delay for the tests to go from research to clinicians. Dr. Nichols started the laboratory called Nichols Institute initially for endocrine tests with the help from academic investigators. He later expanded the tests in various other clinical disciplines such as oncology, genetics, infectious disease, toxicology, immunology, etc. Though he left us at an early age of 67, his legacy as Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute continues.
