Sometimes an event occurs that stops us in our tracks and knocks us off the high horse of our superior function. It is a kind of coming-down-to-earth for the ego. If we can move with the energy of the fall into our inferior function, we can turn misfortune into good fortune. According to John Beebe, the trickster function can help us survive such an event. The trickster demands that we get down and dirty, making us surrender our high position. Once we acknowledge this shadowy, tricksterish side of ourselves, we can learn to dance with the inferior function and find the gifts inherent in such a fall from grace.
In the morning session: Clips will be shown from two films demonstrating the fall from the superior function into the inferior function and the return to consciousness with the help of the trickster function. A brief exercise will provide an experience of the trickster, showing us how to move with its energy.
Participants will gain:
Stay for the optional afternoon session: The trajectory of type development provided by the film clips will be applied to the types of the participants. You will be invited to share crisis moments and events, and these will be analyzed with reference to your type. Exercises will allow you to play in your inferior and trickster functions, with Dr. Shumate modeling the exercises.
For both morning and afternoon sessions, handouts will be provided describing the eight functions, showing where they fall in each type code and how they tend to manifest for each type.
Prior knowledge of the Beebe model is not required but knowledge of the functions would be helpful.
MBTIMP® and APA continuing education credits are available -- 2.5 for the morning session, and 2.0 for the afternoon. FREE for current BAAPT members, $15 for others.
Carol Shumate, Ph.D., teaches the course on psychological types, at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California, and publishes the journal Personality Type in Depth, whose mission is to act as a bridge between depth psychology and psychological type. Previously, she developed curriculum materials and trainings for Type Resources, Inc., including the Function- Archetype Decoder, a software tool that reports research on how the eight Jungian functions tend to manifest for each type, according to the sequence of functions and archetypes in the Beebe model. She is working on two books with the working titles, Jung’s Eightfold Way, and Trickster Leadership: Reversing Life’s Reversals. Carol has ENFP preferences
