Today is an important moment in our national history and for the GLBTQ community, specifically, as we seek to protect and preserve our society's progress. Now is the time to stand up as allies - brothers and sisters in the human race. What will you do to embrace an environment of openness and acceptance?
Research suggests that GLBTQ individuals face physical and mental health disparities linked to societal stigma, discrimination, and denial of their civil and human rights. Discrimination against GLBTQ persons has been associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and suicide. Experiences of violence and victimization are frequent for GLBTQ individuals, and have long-lasting effects on the individual and the community.
Through the EDGY Conference, we will empower our attendees to reverse some of these negative statistics, develop a better understanding of issues facing this population, and ultimately to create a positive change in our societies and develop tolerance for GLBTQ identities.
