Call for Abstracts

The DHSA Global Health Symposium planning committee is accepting abstracts for posters to be displayed at our 2017 symposium, Refugee and Immigrant Access to Care Locally and Globally, to be held on October 28, 2017 at Thomas Jefferson University. Abstract submissions are limited to students, residents, and fellows and may be related to any aspect of global health, including community health, refugees and immigrants. Abstracts in the categories of original research, program evaluation/public health, design and innovation, and clinical care will be considered.

Abstract Selection Process

Abstracts will be selected for poster presentation based on quality, merit and relevance to the conference themes of local and global health. Projects may be in various stages of development. acceptance will be determined by an inter-professional Abstract Review Committee and will be reviewed on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of Topic
  • Originality
  • Global Health Merit and Importance
  • Quality of Research Design and Data Analysis (if scientific abstract)
  • Quality of Presentation
  • Quality of Conclusions

Poster Presentation Format

Poster sessions will total one hour and will consist of a general viewing and author attendance period. Additionally, we will request that all posters remain on display for the duration of the symposium. Instructions for the preparation of posters (including format and size) will be provided to the contact author along with the presentation acceptance notification on September 19, 2017

General Abstract Submission Policies

  • Electronic submission deadline is Friday, September 18, 2017, 11:59 p.m. EST.
  • Only abstracts submitted to ellen.plumb@jefferson.edu will be accepted for review.
  • Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and submitted as a Word document or PDF.
  • Please provide the contact information for the lead author including both email and phone numbers.

Poster Format

For scientific abstracts, we recommend standard subheadings (“Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions”). However, for public health, implementation, or other projects, these may be adjusted to best convey the focus of your project. The submitting author must verify upon submission that all authors have agreed to the submission of the abstract, and that all information within the submission is accurate.

Keynote: Population Displacement and Health: Global and National Perspectives 
Gil Burnham, MD - Johns Hopkins

 Gilbert Burnham, MD, PhD, MS, is an International Health professor and  expert in emergency preparedness and disaster response. Dr. Burnham is  the founder of the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response at Johns  Hopkins. He has extensive experience in emergency preparedness and  response, particularly in humanitarian needs assessment, program  planning, and evaluation that address the needs of vulnerable  populations, and the development and implementation of training  programs. He has worked extensively in the development and evaluation  of community-based health program planning and implementation,  health information system development, management and analysis, and  health system analysis. Dr Burnham's work has involved numerous  humanitarian and development programs for multilateral and non-  governmental organizations, regional health departments, ministries of health (national and district level), and communities in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Recent activities include work with health systems and displaced populations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan and Lebanon. Dr. Burnham teaches a number of graduate courses in public health of displaced populations and community health program development.
