2017 AIAA Design/Build/Fly Champions
presented by
The AeroDesign Team of USC
Thursday, September 21st, 2017
Irvine, CA
The 2017 AIAA DBF competition had rules for a tube-launched UAV completing three hand-launched flights. The USC Team was able to successfully design, build, and fly an aircraft that was high-performing but lightweight, which helped push USC to victory in a tight race for first place.
The AeroDesign Team of USC was founded in 1989 for the annual SAE Aero Design competition. The team shifted to the AIAA’s Design/Build/Fly competition in 1997. Since then, the team has consistently placed within the top twenty out of almost a hundred teams worldwide, including finishing in first place this past academic year. The team attributes success to novel design strategies and precise fabrication techniques, including detailed score analysis, advanced light-weight material selections, innovative control mechanisms, and attention to detail while building multiple competition grade airplanes throughout the year. Come hear team leaders tell their story.
