Democracy in Danger? Heeding History's Lessons

Unchallenged for so long, the primacy and legitimacy of the American system of checks and balances came to be accepted as political bedrock, certain to survive even the most severe earthquakes.

But the daily headlines show the guardrails of American democracy are absorbing a battering and, many analysts now warn, the entire American experiment is in danger of collapse – a majority of Republicans, a new poll shows, favor postponing the 2020 election if President Trump says it’s the only way to ensure only eligible voters are allowed to cast ballots.

“History does not repeat, but it does instruct,” reads the first line of this season’s hottest historical book, “On Tyranny.” “The European history of the twentieth century shows us that societies can break, democracies can fall, ethics can collapse, and ordinary men can find themselves standing over death pits with guns in their hands.”

The book’s author, the noted Yale Historian Timothy  Snyder, will discuss the state of the country’s political health with The Washington Post’s celebrated columnist, Jennifer Rubin, one of the intellectual pillars of neo-conservative movement, at the next “Conversation On the Green,” the interactive Town Hall series.
