6th Dr. Anwar Wissa Lecture 2017

The Wissa lecture emphasizes that integrating geology and rigorous analysis with advanced laboratory and field experiments. The lecture includes dinner and presentations from USF students, USF instructors, and the keynote speaker (Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius). The proceeds will be used to support students interested in geotechnical engineering.

Lecture Overview - Design of single piles, small pile groups, and wide piled foundations

The response of single piles and small pile groups to load differs considerably from that of wide piled foundations. All piles are, of course, affected by the settlement of the soil due to occurrences, such as regional settlement and stress changes due to adjacent foundations, fills, excavations, etc. Wide pile piled-foundations will, in contrast to single piles, also be affected by the compression of the soils below the pile toe level due to the sustained load on the foundation. For pile groups in non-subsiding soil, the response of perimeter piles is stiffer than that of the interior piles, while in subsiding soil, the response of the perimeter piles will be softer than that of the interior piles. Moreover, no drag force will develop along the interior piles. An example is given of a design of a series of small and large, narrow and wide, piled foundations interacting with one another, where the settlement response has been the governing aspect of the design analysis.

Keynote Speaker Bengt H. Fellenius, Dr.Tech., P.Eng.

Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius, formerly Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa, is an internationally recognized foundation engineering consultant and the author of more than 300 technical papers. His professional experience comes from a wide variety of assignments that encompass foundation design for industrial plants, water and sewage treatment facilities, bridges and highway projects, marine structures, and urban area development, as well as participation in special investigations, instrumented field tests, etc. Dr. Fellenius has given lectures and courses to several universities and international conferences throughout America, Europe, and South-East Asia. He currently lives in Sidney, BC, Canada.
