NGSS Lunch and Learn

MEMSPA honors the value of time. In the Lunch & Learn format Leaders of Learning engage in a powerful learning session, eat lunch, and make it back to the building before the end of the day or in time for after school events! Registration begins at 8:30 AM and lunch is served at 12:30 PM. Also, most L & L's are offered No Charge to our MEMSPA Members thanks to our MEMSPA Solution Partners. We thank Stem Scopes as the lunch sponsor for this L & L.

Do not miss this opportunity

MEMSPA Leaders of Learning!

Central Michigan Science Mathematics Technology Center (SMTC) at Central Michigan University (CMU), a center within the Michigan Math and Science Center Network (MMSCN), will address the shifts to the new Michigan Science Standards for K-5 administrators through the use of Phenomenal Science: http://phenomscience.weebly.com.  Phenomenal Science refers to centering science instruction on developing students’ conceptual understanding of real phenomena that actually happen.

Phenomenal Science began as a collaboration between the Central Michigan SMTC and the Great Lakes Bay ISDs to develop K-5 science units through professional learning and evolved into a statewide collaboration.  The result is twenty-one units that contain three-dimensional science instruction according to the Michigan Science Standards (adopted 11/10/15 by Michigan State Board of Education) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), except hands-on components.  The Phenomenal Science unit plans include the goals, evidence, learning plan, instructional cycles (5Es), lesson plan, assessments, handouts, materials lists and sample anchor charts.

Michigan Virtual (MV) funds Phenomenal Science.  The units are free to all educators through the MV Learning Object Repository (LOR) and incorporate blended learning elements and integrate engineering, mathematics and language arts.  Teachers will be able to search the LOR by topics, grade levels, units or lessons. The units are currently available for viewing at http://lor.mivu.org/phenomenal-science.

Professional Learning for teachers will be available focused on instructional strategies for implementing 3-D learning in elementary science instruction, such as: including science discourse, making thinking visible, notebooking, blended learning and engaging students in modeling.  This professional learning can be tailored to meet needs and schedules, and can be face-to-face, online, or blended.  More information around the professional learning opportunities and how Phenomenal Science meets the new science standards and prepares students for new assessments will be shared at the Lunch & Learn.
