  The numbers are eye-opening:

  • Over 42 million borrowers owe roughly $1.3 trillion in student loans.
  • Recent graduates with student loans have left college with an average debt of $37,000.
  • Student loan debt is now the second highest consumer debt category – higher than either credit cards or auto loans.   The only category higher than student debt is mortgage debt.
  • Connecticut places third among states with the highest student debt levels.  A 2015 graduate of a Connecticut institution of higher learning had student loans averaging $34,700.

What do these numbers have to do with financial literacy?  The fact is, most young people will begin their college careers by making one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives – with nearly zero understanding of what they’re getting into.  Yet the amount, type and terms of their student loans will influence almost every other economic decision they make after graduation – including their choice of jobs, if and when they purchase a home, and how much they save for retirement.

The 2017 Connecticut Financial Literacy Summit will look at this growing crisis and how we can help students navigate these dangerous waters. We’ll delve into the economic implications of the college decision, what college-bound individuals need to know about paying for their schooling and how best to deliver that information.  If you care about the financial health of Connecticut's young adults, this is a conference you can't afford to miss!

Who Should Attend

Educators, school administrators, financial aid officers and guidance counselors; parents; policy makers; non-profits and for-profits that offer financial coaching; businesses; all members of the public who support the financial education of Connecticut's students.

More information about the Summit and student debt is available on the following sites:
