Who Let the ANTs Out? Treating Anxiety in Children using CBT and Directive Play Therapy Interventions in VA

Description:

Social anxiety in children is among the four most common forms of anxiety.  Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. Too much stress becomes distress and opens the door to Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) and ultimately Panic Attacks, and various forms of anxiety disorders that are often seen in play therapy.   This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of anxiety and demonstrate cognitive behavior and directive play therapy interventions for children and adolescents. Group discussion, art, music and play therapy will part of this learning experience.

Objectives:

  • State the diagnostic criteria for Social Anxiety
  • Identify the tenets of CBT as described by Aaron Beck, MD
  • Describe the work of Daniel Amen, MD with ANTs in the book, Mind Coach
  • Demonstrate a treatment model for anxiety in children using CBT and Directive Play Therapy interventions
  • Analyze two cases studies using the play therapy treatment model presented
  • Describe play therapy strategies to involve parents in coaching children with anxiety
