Dear 2nd & 3rd Grade Parents,
The Junior Great Books (JGB) program at Prospect School is an extracurricular activity offered to children in the 2nd and 3rd grades. Students will read interpretive stories and share their ideas and opinions about those stories in small discussion groups led by parent volunteers. The JGB program provides an excellent framework for improving reading comprehension and critical thinking skills in an environment where children can contribute with confidence and learn from one another.
The JGB program will span over 7 weeks and cover 6 stories. At the first meeting, we will distribute books and a story schedule, and present the children with guidelines for a productive discussion. The meetings will take place in the MRC on Tuesdays during the recess portion of their lunch period on the following days:
January 30, February 6, 13, 20 and 27, and March 6 and 13
3rd grade students will meet from 11:25 - 11:50 AM, followed by the 2nd grade students from 11:50 – 12:15 PM.
Each child must have an Anthology to participate in the JGB program. The anthology costs $22. The Anthology used for 2nd grade is the Series 2 book (set of 3 books). The Anthology used for 3rd grade is the Series 3, Book One. We are using a new edition for the 3rd grade students, so a new book will need to be purchased. For 2nd graders, you can use one from prior years or you can purchase it online when you register. If you need to order a book you can either pay online (preferred method) or you can write a check out to the Prospect PTO with JGB in the memo line. The deadline for registration is Friday, December 15.
If you would like to volunteer to lead group discussions, please contact Jill Livingston at jilllivingston06@gmail.com. Volunteering is a great way to spend time with your child and their friends with no teaching or prior experience being necessary. All JGB learning materials and discussion questions will be handed out in advance. There will be a JGB Orientation Meeting held in December with the date, time & location to be determined.
