2017 Marine Weather Series

Marine Weather I

In early January of this year, the Corinthian Yacht Club and the Seattle Sailing Club brought you the highly-attended seminar, “Clouds and What They Mean to the Boater”, presented by Lee Chesneau.  Based on the interest generated by that earlier seminar, the CYC and the SSC is pleased to bring you The Marine Weather Series - a series of marine weather workshops and seminars by Lee Chesneau  that focus on different aspects of marine weather theory, analysis, forecasting and decision making.  The program will consist of a series of workshops and seminars that will enable you to further your knowledge and skills across a variety of weather related topics.

The Marine Weather Series will be presented by one of the nation’s preeminent meteorologists and resident of the Pacific Northwest, Lee Chesneau.  Lee presents a distinguished career - a NOAA National Weather Service meteorologist, U.S. Navy civilian Ship Routing Officer (SRO), commercial Route Analyst, and former naval officer, having served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Guam LPH-9 and at numerous U.S. Navy Fleet Weather Centers.  Today, Lee is an accomplished educator and U.S. Coast Guard certified instructor for basic & advanced meteorology.

Marine Weather I is a two-day seminar that will give you a solid understanding of marine weather concepts, symbols, & tools, and you will develop a level of proficiency in the practical application of this knowledge.

Day 1 of this “deep-dive” into marine weather, will cover a variety of topics – the structure of our atmosphere; solar thermal regulation and its impact at a global and local level; moisture and cloud formation; surface level pressure systems; and a discussion of weather systems at a global, synoptic, mesoscale, and microscale levels.

Day 2 begins with a hands-on learning exercise covering the topics from day 1, and then dives into a detailed discussion of the marine advisory & warning system of the U.S. National Weather Service and Environment Canada; air masses and their relation to synoptic scale weather systems; in-depth overview of the Surface Pressure Chart; a discussion of local marine weather of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia; and an afternoon interactive session devoted live weather chart analysis and virtual voyage decision making.
