FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING
Key Elements to note when drawing and painting:
GESTURE
The essence of what an object/figure is doing- observing the twist and tilt.
CENTER LINE
An imaginary line that runs through the core of an object/person.
BALANCE
To achieve balance is crucial, so that the object/figure feels grounded, weighted and stable.
STRUCTURE/Big Shapes/Masses
With drawing and painting, we must think BIG, focus on the masses, and think work our way down to the small details as a drawing develops
-We want to think about the internal structure and not just the external contours that are visible to the human eye
PROPORTION
The size of various aspects/parts of your subject compared to other parts
The more comparisons, the better.
Values: The relative degree of lightness or darkness
Comparing the lightest light to the darkest dark. This becomes most obvious when squinting (as the colors become grey and we can just observe light and dark).
Line/edge quality: The relative darkness, lightness, hardness or softness of a line, decided based on the subject we are describing.
Lost/Found edges: A “Found” edge would be one we are choosing to emphasize, and a lost edge, is the opposite, where we choose to make a light, thin mark that the viewers eye will complete.
Planes-thinking about where the light is hitting the surfaces of the object/figure and at what angle all the surfaces/planes are to the light source. Noting the plane changes, will help you better understand what value these should be.
