LEARNING OBJECTIVE

“Recognizing quality is much like recognizing art; everybody sees something different.”

With regard to online courses, your students, faculty, administrators, peers, and accrediting bodies may not know what to look for in assessing quality. Defining quality standards proves crucial to successful course design and implementation. “Quality Matters is a nationally recognized organization that promotes quality design of online and blended courses with a peer-review process.

After completing the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the current standards for designing an effective online course. They will be able to:

A. Describe underlying principles of Quality Matters (QM)

B. Use QM Rubric and explain scoring system

C. Apply the QM Rubric to Online Course and scenarios

WHAT WOULD YOU LEARN (Instructor perspectives)

This workshop introduces participants to the process and applications of  the Quality Matters (QM) standards in the design of quality online courses. QM is a faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses for hybrid and distance education. The standards uses a set of forty specific elements, distributed across eight broad standards and include:

   1. Course Overview and Introduction

   2. Learning Objectives

   3. Assessment and Measurement

   4. Resources and Materials

   5. Learner Engagement

   6. Course Technology

   7. Learner Support

   8. Accessibility

Partcipants will gain an understanding of the Quality Matters (QM) process, compile examples of best practices in online courses, gather specific ideas for improving their courses, and gain affirmation of their course’s strengths. These are standards are important in understanding the theoretical foundations of online course design and its application for improving online student learning outcomes.
