Costume Society of America Western Region Event
Material Culture:
Form, Function and Fashion
Saturday - Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, California
Focusing on Turtle Bay’s rich collection of textiles, this exhibition goes back into pre-history; takes a journey down the Silk Road; examines the roots of the Industrial Revolution; looks at the concept of fashion; and takes a peek at the future of fabric.
The program will begin on Saturday at 10am, we will visit their exhibitions and have a special viewing of their costume collection, with a Curator Tour lead by Julia Pennington Cronin, Collections and Exhibitions Manager at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Then a visit to the Redding Fashion Alliance, a unique, shared space that exists to foster and strengthen the local fashion community through education, economic development, opportunity and collaboration.
Sunday (Optional) - Turtle Bay Exploration Park
Under the directon of conservator, Elise Rousseau, we will hold an Angel's Project to better preserve Turtle Bay's costume collection. A CSA Angel's project brings in our own textile experts to evaluate and advise a museum on how to better care for their collections. It usually involves cleaning and re-housing items and help with registration and/or cataloguing as needed. This is a special opportunity to help the museum and learn some of the skills and techniques that conservators use. Willingness and enthusiam are all the skills you need to bring. Please click "yes" on the registration page if you are interested in participating as an Angel.
CSA Western Region is please to offer our members a new place to explore as we have never had an event at Turtle Bay Exploration Park. It is an Art, History and Science museum in Redding, three hours North of Sacramento. It is a part of a 300-acre park that bridges the Sacramento river and includes the Sundial Bridge, the museum, a forestry & wildlife center, an arboretum and botanical gardens. https://www.turtlebay.org
