Lighthouse Literary Guild

Fall 2017 Courses 

The Lighthouse Literary Guild brings together lifelong learners of all ages to enhance their writing skills. Through short courses, retreats and visiting scholars the Guild offers opportunities for the casual and serious writer. The Guild is a writing community celebrating the shared solitary experience of “putting pen to paper.”

Spring 2017 Session II courses begin the week of November 2 and run for six weeks through December 14 (closed for Thanksgiving). Each class is 90 minutes, and class sizes are kept small to foster engaged participation. There is a $60 fee for each course.

Using Poetic Devices to Enrich Your Writing 
with Nancy Mitchell

Mondays beginning 11/6 from 4:30 - 6 pm. 

In weekly workshops we will critique writing with an eye/ear/mind/heart to how successful fellow writers have been in articulating intention with a variety of literary techniques. Writing will be generated by prompts given by the instructor at the beginning of each class. Three days before class meets fellows will e-mail each other work, which they will critique before class. In workshop we will share these critiques with fellow writers. 


 

 

Creating and Managing a Killer Blog
with Mindie Burgoyne

Tuesdays beginning 11/7 from 4 -5:30 pm.

Mindie will share the techniques she uses to run several succesful blogs, both for business development and for fun. 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Show, Don't Tell - Using Art as Your Muse

Wednesdays beginning 11/8 from 4:30-6 pm.

This course combines descriptive writing instruction with an art infusion, meant to inspire any writer to create vivid images with words. 

 

 

 


 

Writing for Publication

Thursdays beginning 11/2 from 2:30-4 pm. 

This class will focus on the correct way to write for various kinds of publications, from letters to the editor to newspaper columns to magazine articles. Depending on the target audience and kind of publication, writing styles vary. These would be discussed, as well as using proper sentence structure and grammar, colorful descriptions, high-level vocabulary and a style of writing that draws and keeps the reader's attention. In this class you will learn to mold articles in a way that takes the readers by the hand and draw them all the way through the story, keeping their interest while educating, entertaining and informing the readers. Students will discuss the process of getting published as well as focus on mastering correct grammar and punctuation and improving vocabulary.
