Essentials of Individual Positive Behavior Supports for Home, School and Community 

This training session will introduce the essential components of Positive Behavior  Support  (PBS) which is a multicomponent approach to assessing and treating challenging behaviors commonly exhibited by individuals with developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities.  Participants will be introduced to a variety of a tools that can be used to assess the function or cause of challenging behavior.  The presenter will then introduce evidence-based  intervention strategies based on function. Emphasis will be placed on proactive interventions and strategies to teach alternative behavior. This training is appropriate for anyone who provides service to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, including school  and community service personnel.  Families and caregivers of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities may also find the material helpful.

At the completion of this training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the components of Positive Behavior Support
  • Identify the common functions/causes of challenging behavior.
  • Describe the characteristics and components of the different types of functional behavior assessment.
  • Define and describe effective antecedent interventions.
  • Define and describe effective strategies for teaching alternative behavior.
  •  Identify the essential components of behavior support plans.
