"CHALLENGES IN OPEN PIT MINE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING"

Presented by: Dr. David Nutakor

Dr. David Nutakor is a professional geotechnical engineer with over 10 years experience in open pit geotechnical engineering. David received his BS degree in mining engineering from University of Mines and Technology in Ghana, MS in mine geotechnical engineering from University of Nevada, Reno, and PhD in geotechnical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla.  David is currently the head of Geotechnical/Hydrological department for the Rio Tinto California operations. He has been with Rio Tinto for the past nine years. Prior to joining Rio Tinto, David worked for Newmont Mining Corporation in Nevada and Ghana. He has published papers on pit slope stability evaluation and rock joint testing. 

David will be giving a presentation on the Challenges in Open Pit Mine Geotechnical Engineering.There will be discussion of slope design, implementation, and verification in open pit mining, with emphasis on various monitoring systems used to monitor mine pit slopes in order to protect equipment and personnel working in the pit area.  During David’s time with Rio Tinto and Newmont, he’s seen a lot of challenges that he’ll be sharing in this presentation.
